Monday June 15, the Supreme Court announced its decision that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 against sex discrimination now applies to LGBTQ persons, and in particular to gay and transgendered persons. All Christians want laws to prevent those in LGBTQ life from being mistreated because of their lifestyle. However, this decision is alarming because of the court’s interpretation of, “discrimination on the basis of sex.” The court admits that in 1964, this phrase meant the biological reality definable as male or female. But they expanded this meaning to NOW INCLUDE sexual orientation, and sexual identity.
No one should ever persecute those in the LGBTQ life. But in 1964, when this law was passed, homosexuality was viewed as a wrong, broken sexual practice and a boy thinking he was a girl was understood to be a case of Gender Identity Disorder. Those in these categories were viewed as needing help, not viewed as a protected class. The original 1964 Civil Rights Act expanded civil rights to make sure girls and women were treated fairly. The court NOW interprets the word, sex, to mean more than just biological differences; now it includes sexual orientation, and one’s own definition of one’s gender identity. This opinion was written by Neil Gorsuch, expected to be a conservative judge. But perhaps, NOT surprisingly, he is also the youngest judge, reflecting more contemporary views of sexuality.
Again, every Christian wants laws that protect those in the LGBTQ life from being harmed through hate and bigotry. But this ruling, and the reasoning behind it both reflect and further open the door to a destructive, fractured view of sexual personhood that will shape the rising generation if it goes unchecked. This Gender Unicorn view, promoted by the worldwide organization, Transgender Student Educational Resources, separates biological sex from gender identity, sexual orientation, romantic attraction, and gender expression—proclaiming that every individual has the right to chose where he/she is on the male-female spectrum in these five categories. Here is the link to several short video clips I have made about the damage this view is doing to our children.
To help Christian parents, schools, and churches, I have written a book called, Anchoring Your Child to God’s Truth in a Gender-Confused Culture: Helping Our Children Embrace Their Calling to Godly Manhood and Womanhood. Here is the Amazon link and the PCA bookstore link, which has testimonials about the book’s impact. Calling repeatedly for Christians to model Christ’s compassion for those in the LGBTQ life, the book equips parents with a winsome biblical worldview response to each of the five parts of the Gender-Unicorn worldview. It then lays out a practical picture of godly manhood and womanhood for parents, and youth leaders to guide their kids to embrace and pursue. Please let others know about this resource. Perhaps your adult SS class or home group could study it this fall.
Here is something else you can do. On July 18, August 1, and August 15, we will be promoting this book in World Magazine and through their digital Impressions advertising from July 18-Aug 31. Would you please pray for every Bible believing parent to become aware of this resource to guide their children?
Our battle is not with TSER, the LGBTQ movement, or politicians whose policies undermine biblical values. Paul reminds us, We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places (Eph 6:12). We must fight with spiritual weapons, including the belt of truth to surround our loved ones in their views of gender and sexuality. And as Paul continues, we fight by praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, (we must) keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints (Eph 6:18).
We cannot reverse the thinking of the Supreme Court. But we can fight for truth, where it matters most—in the shaping of the rising generation of Christ-followers so they celebrate and confidently embrace God’s glorious design of humans as male and female, created differently to complement, i.e. complete each other.
